Bena Lulua maske fra DR Congo

ID 270

Description
Lulua masks, like those of the Kete close to them, were used during Mukanda-type male initiation rituals. Mukanda initiates are young boys whose father physically and symbolically separates them from their mother by isolating them by age groups in the bush. Circumcision is the first rite of Mukanda, then come the teachings such as: dances, music and the use of masks. The masks are just representations of a certain type of ancestral spirits called bakisi. The latter show great similarities with those of the Chokwé which are noticeable not only at the level of concept, but also at the level of the form and style of ritual objects.
